what to do after you have made a website

Website Search Engine optimisation and submission

There are five main search engines that you will need to submit your website to, they are Google, Msn, alexa, aol and yahoo. There are also many other smaller search engines and some submission companies can submit to 100's of them at a time.
when you submit to a search engine they will usually get you to attach a meta tag to the head section of your webpage, this will tell there bot that you are the real owner of that site.

Sitemaps

Once your site is submitted you will then need to produce a sitemap for the search engine to see what pages to scan, this part can be completed with a simple program or done manually, this sitemap will need to be placed in your webpage directory as a sitemap.xml file, then from the control panel of the search engine place a link to it and click verify

Robots file
The next stage will be to set up a robots.txt file in your directory, this tells the search bots where your sitemap is and what files can be searched. this can simply be created from notepad and google will tell you what needs to be in the file.

Link Building for better search results

Any web page needs links both incomming and outgoing, Search engines rate a website through a ranking system based on the number of incomming links.

The best way to get incomming links to your site is to post on forums and blogs with a link to your site in your signature. There are sites designed to help with free backlinks, such as:

Make Money Online

Once your site is optimised for the search engines to pick up and you have enough backlinks to your site you will start rising in the search rankings bringing in more visitors, put these visitors to good use and offer them services such as an e-store etc or affiliate linking

Google adsense is one way to add a bit of revenue to your site through ads posted and there are many sites that sell products on the internet that have affilliate membership, amazon for example.

And thats about it really unless you wish to use ppc (pay per click) advertising or paying for traffic to be directed to your site (you normally pay per 1000 hits to your site)
